Am I eligible to do a midwifery course as a mature student?
I want to study midwifery, but they ask BBC at A-Levels. I’m 27 and only achieved CCD 10 years ago. I do already have a degree, albeit in marketing so not related. Would I be eligible to do the degree starting September, or would it be best to take a course first? (Open University level 1, 60 units required for course).
You have a few options here:
1. You can apply as a mature student (you’ll have as much chance as any to get in – your current degree will show your standard of education and that’s all they are really looking for in BBC at A level)
2. You can study your Open University course (which would probably stand you in no better of a possition than you’re already in)
3. You could study a foundation year in Medical Science, Nursing or Midwifery. (which again probably wouldn’t be worth you doing being as you already hold a degree)
What I will say is that, although the UK are actually screaming out for midwives… getting the places in University are HARD work. Midwifery was what I wanted to do when i first applied to university. I applied to 6 universities through UCAS and through to interview stage in each one and failed to gain entry into any of them (each university offered me an unconditional place in nursing instead). I did this for 2 years running, it’s really crushing when you know your grades are above required and you still can’t get in!.
On the 2 years i tried the universities i got down to the last 100 applicants at interviewing stage, and when i called each of the universities I was told the same thing… there were over 350 applicants to each university each year and each university only had government funding to provide 15 places (5 of which had to be given to qualified nurses who wanted to go onto midwifery if they had applied) – so essentially, there were 10 places to be given out and 350+ applications.
After 2 years of fighting and dissapointment, I’ve decided to get into it through a different route. I’m now on my final year of my science degree and will be studying medicine next year at post grad level, this will allow me to specialise in OB/GYN and get into the midwifery side of things that way
I wish you the best of luck in applying and hope you are more successful than I was. Please don’t get too disheartened if you don’t get in, it really is a tough course to get onto! (but your current qualifications are fine)
