Can I manually set the F setting on a Nikon D50?
I’ve just bought a Vivitar 100mm macro lens with a Nikon mount for my Nikon D50 camera. The lens fits fine on the camera and everything seems to work okay but when I try to take a photo all I get is blackness.
I’ve worked out it’s because I can set the F setting on the lens (between 3.5 and 22) but can’t then seem to set any aperture on the camera. As such, I’m assuming the aperture ring is completely closed and no light is getting through.
On every setting, including Manual, the F setting on the camera LCD screen just flashes, without showing any number at all, and nothing I can seem to do will let me set it manually.
Anybody got a bright idea?
Which Vivitar 100mm macro lens do you use?
You probably use an older type of lens.
You can use many old Nikkor mount lenses on their new cameras but not all functions/settings work with them. Read the manuals.
Your lens needs to have a connection to the camera so it can communicate with it about aperture and focussing. Some Nikon mount lenses communicate with the camera only mechanically, some both.
Only AI-P, AF, AF-D, AF-G and DX series are able to meter with your camera and from these series only AF-D, AF-G and DX series are able to use all the settings and modes of your camera.
AI, AI-S and E series can’t even meter on your camera (they communicate mechanically) and if your macro lens doesn’t have auto focus it’s probably a AI or AI-S. In that case it isn’t possible to set your aperture with the camera because your D50 tells the lens the value in a electronically way. It can only communicate with the lens when to close the aperture. And that is done mechanically.
Pre AI series don’t fit your camera.
Normally you still can use it manually by metering with a separate light meter and setting the shutter speed on the camera in M mode while setting the aperture on the lens with the aperture ring.
Check to see if your camera can manually work with the lens by bracketing:
set the camera to M mode, one shutter speed (1/60 or 1/125 for example) not to high ISO (don’t put it on auto ISO) and make photos of the same averagely lit scenery from the same point of view with every aperture available manually set with the aperture ring. If it works your should have a serie of gradually different exposed photos, one photo should be well exposed.
To be sure: check if the lens’s aperture works. If you look at the back of the lens there should be a little “rod” sticking out of the lens. (This “rod” is connected to the camera so you can focus with full aperture open whatever the setting of the aperture will be. As soon you press the release button of the camera this little rod is moved by the camera so it closes to the set aperture to make the exposure). You can move this rod. Set your lens at every aperture and move this little “rod” at every setting. The aperture should open en close.
