chosing between AF Zoom-NIKKOR 80-200mm f/2.8D ED and AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II?
i will soon be buying a lens to my collection but i want to know more about these 2 lenses so i can decide myself which one could i go for. if anyone has any experiance between both of them i’ll be happy to hear.

I see you don’t vote for best answers (or provide any kind of feedback whatsoever). That irks me a bit to be honest, since providing a decent answer involves 10 minutes of typing, but here goes anyway…
I just went through this buying decision myself and got an 80-200mm f/2.8 ED. For me, price was the deciding factor. I purchased my 80-200 used for about $800 (€600), whereas a new 70-200mm VR ll costs a whopping $2170.
What do you get with the 80-200mm f/2.8 ED?
* Excellent optical performance
* Even very good performance with a Kenko Pro 1.4x TC (with auto-focus and metering)
* Decent AF speed, provided you use a body with a built-in focus motor. This lens will not AF on entry level bodies (D40, D40X, D60, D3000, D3100, D5000.)
What does the 70-200mm VR ll offer for the added price?
* The image quality is a tiny bit better
* The 70-200mm reportedly provides good image quality with the new Nikon 2x TC
* A very good VR system
* Slightly faster AF, and AF on all Nikon dSLR cameras.
For me, all of the added goodies of the 70-200 were ‘nice to have’ but not ‘must have’ features.
Midway between these lenses, you have two other Nikon options: a used 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-S for about $1000, and a used 70-200mm f/2.8 VR l for about $1350.
The 80-200mm AF-S version will AF on all Nikon dSLR bodies, and focus quickly.

If you want excellent optical performance on a shoestring budget, even that’s possible: get an earlier Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 version. Nikon made several – here’s the list: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/80-200mm-history.htm
Optically, they really are all excellent ( http://www.naturfotograf.com/lens_zoom_03.html#top_page ). The two things to consider with these earlier 80-200mm lenses are the AF issue (with entry level bodies) and the lack of a tripod collar on some models. When you use a heavy 80-200mm on a tripod, it’s best to mount the lens on the tripod instead of the body. You can purchase a collar separately from Kirk but this adds to the price again ( http://www.kirkphoto.com/Lens_Collar_for_80-200mm_Push-Pull_D.html ).
So you don’t have just 2 options… you have about 6, ranging from $400 to $2200 and they all produce fantastic image quality. Which version you should buy (and how much you end up spending) depends entirely on the other features you need. Since you don’t tell us, we can’t pick one for you.
